Snap a Selfie Small Business Saturday Contest

Snap a Selfie Small Business Saturday Contest

Okay that's a mouthful but let me explain

The days are growing colder. The leaves are falling off the trees and we are slowly but surely getting towards the holiday season

This year I'm celebrating my 5th small business Saturday by running a very special contest!

This year I don't want to offer retail specials or conditioning treatments.

I want to celebrate you supporting small businesses like myself and give back to you

Want to win $1000 dollars worth of salon services?

Super simple,

All you need to do is snap a selfie with me, tag the salon and post with a little shout-out about what you love about Misfit Salon Company (or me whichever comes to mind!)

And you'll be entered in to win!

Let's get personal with each other and all be winners this holiday season.

How often should I wash my hair!?

Do you know there's no magic number?

Well there's sort of one.

More often than not my salon time entails telling people how to take care of their hair.

Most of the time people are just following a logical conclusion. If something is "dirty" you wash it.

Does your car frequent a dirt road? Wash it?

Does the family dog like to roll in mud puddles? Wash it.

So it only makes sense when it comes to hair care, right?

Nope.

Most of the time your body, including your hair and scalp do a good job of keeping themselves clean.

More often than not people are washing too frequently. Stripping hair and scalp of vital oils that promote health. Which leads to the body over producing and making the original problem worse.

So what is the magic number? Usually unless doing heavy physical activity that produces sweat. I say 1-3 times a week. Now this is all dependent on your lifestyle, hair type etc…

I know that number(s) sounds small and maybe it doesn't feel possible but I always encourage my clients to try it.

Many have heard me call it "hell week"

I say they can curse my name all that week because your scalp and hair is "resetting"

I promise you'll see the benefits.

Once your scalp resets try cutting back washing to only 1-3 times a week.

Dry shampoo can be a great resource for you during this time.

Also try switching up your pillowcase and keeping your hands out of your hair.

The oils from out hands can transfer to our hair/ face and contribute to the problem.

Heres hoping all this helps!

As always the DMs on all platforms for all your hair questions!

Lucky Girl Syndrome

Are you truly lucky?

Let's talk about "lucky girl syndrome"

let's delve into a trend I've seen recently on social media

Lucky girl syndrome is the phenomenon of repeating "I'm so lucky" as a mantra and believing/manifesting that everything works out for you simply because it does.

I am all for the power of positive thinking

But there's also something to be said for toxic positivity.

What does all of this half to do with hair?

Well as much as I care about how your hair looks.

I care more about how you feel about yourself.

I have so many people tell me they wish they could be brave or confident to have certain hair looks

They often turn to me and ask how to achieve that.

I don't have an answer truly

I just believe that my look or my hair looks good on me and more often than not, people agree.

A manifestation if you would

"I believe I look good, therefore I do"

And that's the best advice I can give

Much like the "lucky girl syndrome"

This year in the salon I want to make you feel good.

I want you to feel lucky.

Looking good is a bonus

I have a confession

I have a confession

I've not been the most honest I could be

I pride myself on being a safe and welcoming space for all

And I still aspire to be that

I always brag about how much education I've taken

And while I do, I have to admit

There's a gap in my education

In my resume if you will

I was never properly taught how to provide services for highly textured hair.

My instructor in beauty school literally told me

"We don't learn that kind of hair here"

My hand literally smacked when I tried to learn from a fellow student

Theres so much misinformation and mystery around the textured hair community.

And honestly it intimidated me.

But I don't want to be intimidated anymore

So here's where I need your help.

I want to experience the joy of this hair

And I want you to feel safe receiving color services in my chair

So I am offering a model call of hair color (vivids or otherwise) to people who have highly textured hair.

Provided to you for just cost of products

Your hair will be featured on all my platforms so comfort in front of the camera is a must.

Does this sound like you or someone you know?

Please send them my way.

I want to fully own my reputation I'm trying to put forth of being an inclusive salon.

This is one of the steps I can do

You are Worth Taking Care Of

It all begins with an idea.

You are worth taking care of yourself

Hey friends

Can I tell you something?

I have seasonal affective disorder

Some know it as seasonal depression

And even though the temperatures rising and the days are growing longer

I know I'm not alone

And I want you to know you're not alone in how you feel.

I'm inspired by an amazing human and fellow stylist to bring a service into the salon that I've offered before but now I want to give it the attention it deserves.

If mental health makes self care seem mountainous, let me take care of washing your hair. For free. For real.

I know some days can feel so hard. And hope may be so difficult to find.

I want you to know I'm on your side. You deserve to be taken care of. You're worthy no matter how many days it's been.

I'll be adding "self care hair" to my menu

All you need to do is select it for and I'll take care of the rest.

I promise to be gentle, kind and helpful to you.

To be discreet and non judgemental

And give you the best care I can

You try hard

It all begins with an idea.

You try hard and you give a damn, that's it"

I am not a guru on children in the salon I'm not. but I can tell you how I got here I became a mother in 2010 to my daughter and then again to my son in 2012 Before that though I babysat and worked many summers at a girl scout resident camp teaching young girls how to live in the woods. Why does that equate to anything? I couldn't tell you. I have no formal training, no child development degree, no certificates But I try to be patient, I try to be kind. I have snacks, a basket full of toys, water. Movies to watch, games to play. I've let kids spray me with water. Demolish my sucker stash I've let them cut my hair (I'm serious) I've laid belly down on my salon floor while a child was iPad distracted to get around their ears without fuss. I've been kicked, pinched, hit, screamed at you name it. But I didn't give up on making it good for the kids. I am so lucky to have the valuable gift of trust placed on me when it comes to children and their families. My son being on the autism spectrum was a big proponent for me specialize in adapting me and my salon for people with sensory concerns. He has scratched, hit, cried, screamed, thrown up. Anything he could do to get away from the unpleasant experience I was trying my hardest to adapt him to a typical salon experience and one day I stopped and realized I had it backwards. So I learned through him. So because of him I got better. And now I know I'm a household name for sensory families. I think I had a friend say it best, when I said I didn't understand why I had garnered such attention when it came to children "You try hard and you give a damn"
